Coronavirus pandemic: The travelling dilemma during the COVID-19 crisis

This year the world has changed in every aspect. What we knew and to what we were used to, does not exist anymore. In March 2020, in the blink of an eye, we entered a new era. A new era completely unfamiliar for us. And yes, 8 months later, we are getting used to it, but we still have so many dilemmas.

the travelling dilemma during the COVID-19 crisis

Traveling is one of the aspects of our lives that has been more affected by the Pandemic, and we have so many dilemmas and doubts in relation to it, like, is it safe to cross borders? is it safe to visit new places? which means of transport is safer?

However, the main dilemma among people in relation to travelling is: should I travel or not? Well, we have got good news for you! Despite of the Pandemic, you can still travel safely! It is true that you cannot travel as you used to before March 2020, and improvising during your trip, and non-planning is not valid anymore. However, there are many ways in which you can still travel, and through which you will have an amazing experience.

Last week, I was able to travel to San Sebastian, a beautiful city in the North of Spain. There, it is when I realised that we can still travel, as long as we are careful and respect all the COVID-19 restrictions. After the trip, I decided to create this guide, to help other traveller souls like me to keep travelling during these hard times.

BEFORE THE TRIP

#1 Choose a destination that is safe

Before travelling and before choosing your destination, you should first, look at the restrictions of your home city, and only travel if you are permitted to do so. Then, you should make research in order to choose a destination that is safe. There are cities in which the COVID-19 has hit harder, so try to choose a city which is relatively COVID-free.

Moreover, you should choose a destination inside your country. Why? Because, all economies in the world have been hit by the Pandemic, so, if you decide to travel within your own country, you will be helping your country’s economy to recover. In my country, Spain, for example, the economy is based on the sector of tourism, so travelling inside the country contributes a lot to the economy to recover. That is why I chose San Sebastian.

#2 Choose accommodation that is safe

Of course, when you travel, you will need accommodation that is safe. There are some accommodations that are safer than others, that is why I recommend you to choose a hotel or an apartment, as you will have guaranteed that the COVID measures are respected and everything is COVID-free.

When I travelled last week, I searched for apartments in San Sebastian, and finally I choose a beautiful apartment by the beach which respected all the safety measures.

#3 Choose a means of transport that is safe

From all the means of transport that you can choose, your car is the safer one. If you have the possibility, always use your car to travel, as it is the only means of transport in which you are completely safe from the virus.

If you cannot use a car, don’t worry, it is not the end of the world! You can use other means of transport like trains or planes. As long as all the COVID restrictions are respected, you will be safe.

#4 Plan your trip

It is very important that you plan your trip beforehand, and that you schedule all the places you want to go, because there are many restrictions to enter places, and in most of them, you will need a ticket to access.

DURING YOUR TRIP

During your trip, we are only giving you one tip:

BE RESPONSIBLE!

This is the most important tip to be safe during your trip. Respect all the COVID-19 restrictions that have been set in your destination. You must make some research about the restrictions that have been implemented in your destination, and compel with them.

Avoid places that are crowded. Also, avoid places in which you think that restrictions are not being respected. And of course, always wear your mask!
