Face Recognition Technology Identifying The Missing Children with CCTV

We always talk about how the crimes related to the online world have been increasing and how we can use the algorithms of machine learning to help chase the intruders and prevent cyberattacks. But the thing is, bad people don’t only operate in the online world. Their existence is a very gruesome reality of the present physical world, and they act on no discrimination against anyone. Child abduction is a live example of their vicious acts and with the help of facial recognition technology, we can stop them from hurting our innocent kids.

The case of missing children

According to Australian Federal Police, International Missing Young Children’s Day marks up the information against the children going missing. To raise awareness and to prevent these happenings, The National Missing Persons Coordination Centre accompanies the International Centre for Missing and Exploited Children. The global missing children network is working with many countries over the globe in an attempt to make people realize how serious the matter is, and is a hope for the missing children.

In Australia, every 2 children, under the age of 18, go missing every hour, making it 48 children per day. The worry is that these kinds of incidents don’t make their appearance on the news. Similarly, missing women also aren’t discussed a lot. It is required for the government officials and security sectors to take notice of these happenings, work through a policy or law to help the matter, and improve the security of the citizens to stop these occurrences.

What is facial recognition?

Machine learning is talked about a lot these days. The advancements brought by AI technology are jaw-dropping and should be considered to be added in various departments. Face technology is another great invention and its incorporation with the security sector in detecting criminals can help save the victims and reduce crime rates.

A face recognition technology detects the face of an individual and verifies the identity of that individual. This machine augmented technology detects the facial features of the individual and checks its accuracy ratio with the facial identity information given to it.

How does face verification work?

Face recognition works on three basic principles; face detection, face capture, and face match.

  • Face detection maps the feature of the person with 3D mapping and detects the features, texture, and depth
  • Face capture converts that high-level information into machine information, capturing the facial features in the digital format.
  • Face match takes that generated information to compare it with the pre-added facial information, provided to the system

Example

As reported by the Wired, A student replicated  6000 pictures of people’s faces from 827 videos available on Parlour, of the 6th January event on the Capitol building, and uploaded them on his website named ‘Face of the riot’. He used an open-source facial extraction application for this purpose.

A word on identification and authentication

Though they may sound the same, identification and authentication come with different definitions. Identification of the person, answers the question of who that person is, while authentication confirms the identity of the person, checking if that person is what he is claiming to be. Both identification and authentication help the face recognition technology in identifying whether the scanned image of the person has a high approximate ratio to the picture available in the system or not.

Facial verification helps in law enforcement

Adding a Face verification solution to the institute dealing with the law enforcement can prove to be highly profitable for them, as it will help the organizations in working against the alleged activities, culprit detections, and track the lawbreakers. Installing facial verification in the software of crime departments can recognize the face of the criminals along with the verification of their identities in seconds. Mostly the departments would have to bring the witnesses to recognize the culprits, but if the identity information of the criminal is already added into the government systems, then verifying that criminals would take a matter of seconds. Digitalizing the departments with the addition of face verification solution will faster the crime detection processes and enhance the procedure of protecting the citizens

Online Face Verification of missing children and kidnapping cases

With the installation of online face verification in the CCTV and live traffic cameras, we can not only detect the delinquent and lawbreakers but can also locate the reported missing children and disoriented adults who have lost their way. As discussed above, the reports of children going missing are increasing, if the police departments install face verification solutions in the public cameras, those people can be detected and found. The kidnappers can be caught in the hands of justice and punished, and we can introduce peace in society.

Concluding the topic

Let’s take a scenario where a criminal has escaped prison and police are running after him. If there is face recognition installed in the CCTV, the criminal can be easily caught with the face detection software. Face verification solutions are important in police departments and crime sectors. Not only can it fasten their crime detection process but can also confirm the criminals’ identities with accuracy.
