Former New York Jets offensive lineman Nick Mangold has passed away at the age of 41, the team confirmed on Sunday morning.

The seven-time Pro Bowler and one of the most respected players in franchise history had recently revealed he was battling kidney disease and awaiting a transplant.

Jets Chairman Woody Johnson released an emotional statement honoring Mangold’s impact both on and off the field.

“Nick was more than a legendary center,” Johnson said. “He was the heartbeat of our offensive line for a decade and a beloved teammate whose leadership and toughness defined an era of Jets football. Off the field, Nick’s wit, warmth, and unwavering loyalty made him a cherished member of our extended Jets family.”

Just days before his death, Mangold had shared a deeply personal message with fans through Instagram, revealing the seriousness of his health struggles.

“This isn’t an easy message to share, but I want to be open about what’s been happening with me and my health,” he wrote on October 14. “In 2006, I was diagnosed with a genetic defect that has led to chronic kidney disease. After a rough summer, I’m undergoing dialysis as we look for a kidney transplant. I always knew this day would come, but I thought I would have more time.”

Mangold’s statement drew overwhelming support from the football community, former teammates, and fans who rallied behind him as he began treatment. Sadly, his condition worsened before a transplant could take place.

Jets Vice Chairman Christopher Johnson also remembered the longtime center as a model of reliability and integrity.

“For over a decade, he anchored our offensive line with unmatched skill and determination, earning the respect of teammates, opponents, and fans alike,” Johnson said.

“His contributions on the field were extraordinary — but it was his character, humility, and humor off the field that made him unforgettable.”

Mangold, a first-round pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, played his entire 11-year career with the New York Jets. He became a cornerstone of the team’s offensive line, known for his strength, precision, and leadership.

On ESPN’s Sunday NFL Countdown, former Jets head coach Rex Ryan, who coached Mangold for six seasons, grew emotional as he reacted to the news.

“It’s brutal. Such a great young man,” Ryan said while holding back tears. “I had the pleasure of coaching him for six years on the Jets. He was one of the best players and people I’ve ever been around.”

Nick Mangold’s legacy extends far beyond the football field. He will be remembered as a leader, a teammate, and a beloved figure who gave everything to the game — and to the people around him.
