The legislation as stated under the “shops and establishments act “ entitles the employees with a certain number of paid leaves. The individuals employed in factories are prescribed with certain leaves under factories act imposed by the federal government in the year 1972. 

It is essential for any employee to maintain a healthy life balance. A break from regular work plays an important role in maintaining a healthy work life balance. The leaves included in the HR policy are categorized differently. Leaves such as paid leaves, earned leaves comp off are alloted besides the days off mentioned in the holiday calendar.

Let’s dig a little and gain better insight in various categories of leaves:

Annual leaves

These annual leaves are also known as earned leaves or privileged leaves. Such leaves are alloted to the employee at the end of each month. These leaves can be encashed at the end of the year. The employee can opt to cube leaves in case he/she runs out of sick leaves. In general, the procedure of attaining such leave requires the employee to inform the employer in advance and fulfill the requirement as stipulated in the HR policy.

Casual Leaves

Casual leaves are alloted to the employee which he/she can avail for personal reasons. These leaves can be availed if he/she wants a day or two off. Casual leaves are not centered for vacation. These leaves are credited on a monthly basis. Once the year ends these leaves are not carried forward or encashed. In the present time it is seen that the employees tend to shift the paradigm towards converting the casual leaves into annual leaves at the end of the year. 

Sick leave

Organizations tend to provide leaves aimed for medical reasons. If the employee is sick they can avail these leaves. 

During the present time, humans are fighting a battle with the first and second wave of coronavirus. The human resource team came up with policies to provide entitled leaves for the employee who got affected by coronavirus. These policies have aimed to provide comforting days off for the employees to take care of their loved one fighting the battle. 

Compensatory off /comp off

Compensatory off or comp off has a varied paradigm of functioning. There are situations when an employee has to work on holidays one week off due to lack of workforce or any other reason. The HR policy provides him/her with the opportunity to generate leave on any other working day as compensation. The employee has an option to choose from a day off or encash the day for some extra cash. 

Leave without pay

Leave without pay comes into play when the employee has no paid leaves. The employee can avail these leave informing the employer or the superior. They can avail as many days as they want. 

Maternity leave

The maternity benefit act in the year 1961 aims to provide the female employee with job security during pregnancy or childbirth. These are paid leaves for 60 to 90 days. The number of days depends on the governments amended policies and HR policies of the organization.

Leaves are one of the essential parts of an employee’s life cycle. The above mentioned are categories that leave can be divided into. Generally, these are the leaves that the employee enjoys besides the designated holidays. There are a certain number of benefits that can be availed such as comp off or earned/annual leaves. 

The policies amended by the federal and state government to ensure that the employees have adequate amounts of rest and maintain a healthy life balance.
