Batteries. Just about every business uses them in some form, but they can be tricky to store! Put them in the wrong conditions, and you could run into problems ranging from battery damage to a workplace fire.
These tips for safely storing batteries at your business cover ways to reduce those risks.

Keep Batteries Away From Heat Sources
High temperatures accelerate chemical reactions inside a battery. The damage can build quickly, with heat raising the risk of swelling, leaking, or venting gases.
Store batteries in a space where the temperature stays consistently below 77°F. That rules out storage near boilers, HVAC equipment, direct sunlight through windows, or any room that runs warm during summer months. Even a week of elevated heat in a storage closet is enough to degrade battery performance and increase risk.
Store Batteries at the Right Charge Level
A fully drained battery and a fully charged battery both carry more risk in long-term storage than one sitting at a partial charge.
For most battery types, storing at around 40 to 60 percent charge reduces internal stress on the cells. If you’re pulling batteries off equipment for seasonal storage or rotating a backup supply, check the charge level before shelving them.
Separate Battery Chemistries
Not all batteries behave the same way, and mixing types in the same bin creates confusion at best and a hazard at worst.
Alkaline, NiMH, and lithium batteries all have different storage requirements, discharge rates, and failure modes. When they’re jumbled together, employees pull the wrong type for the wrong device, and partially drained batteries end up next to fresh ones. Label your storage bins by chemistry and keep each type in its own designated spot.
Use Non-Conductive Storage Containers
Metal bins and trays conduct electricity. If a battery terminal makes contact with a metal surface—especially with another battery terminal nearby—you can get an unintended discharge or a short circuit.
Plastic or rubber containers are the right choice for battery storage. If you’re storing loose batteries rather than batteries still in their original packaging, add individual terminal covers or a strip of electrical tape over the contacts. This step gets skipped constantly in business settings, yet it does a lot to reduce the risk of accidental shorts.
Keep Batteries in Their Original Packaging When Possible
The original packaging isn’t just for looks. It holds batteries in place, keeps terminals from touching each other, and protects against moisture exposure.
When you break open a package to use one or two batteries and toss the rest loose into a drawer, you’re removing all that protection at once. If the original packaging is damaged or gone, a small plastic battery organizer or a case designed for that battery size does the same job. The point is to keep each battery isolated so terminals aren’t making contact with anything they shouldn’t.
Protect Against Moisture and Humidity
Moisture corrodes battery terminals. Once corrosion builds up, the battery may not make proper contact with the device it’s powering. Depending on the chemistry, a corroded battery can also leak.
Humidity is a particular issue in warehouses, basements, and storage rooms that don’t have climate control. A sealed storage cabinet with a small desiccant packet inside keeps the environment dry enough to prevent damage. If you notice a white or blue-green residue on battery terminals, that’s corrosion, and those batteries need to be disposed of properly rather than placed back into service.
Secure High-Risk Battery Types in a Fireproof Safe
Some types of batteries are prone to thermal runaway—for example, lithium-ion cells used in power tools, laptops, and backup power systems. For these batteries, you need a secure, fireproof safe to contain a failure before it spreads. These safes are built to withstand the extreme heat generated during thermal runaway and to prevent fire from escaping the container.
Conduct Regular Battery Inspections
Batteries don’t always show problems immediately. A battery that looks fine on Monday can be swollen, leaking, or unusually warm by Friday.
Build a routine inspection into your storage process. Check high-turnover inventory weekly and inspect backup or seasonal stock at least monthly. During each inspection, look for swelling, discoloration, unusual warmth, and any sign of leaking. Remove any battery that shows these signs immediately and follow your local disposal guidelines.
Establish a First In, First Out Rotation
Batteries sitting at the back of the shelf for two years while newer stock gets used first is a waste of inventory and a storage hazard.
With a first in, first out system, employees use the oldest batteries before opening newer stock. Date each shipment when it arrives so employees know which batteries to reach for first. This keeps older batteries from sitting in storage past their intended shelf life and gives you a better idea of how quickly your business goes through its supply.
Train Your Team on Battery Handling Procedures
Storage protocols only work if the people handling batteries actually follow them. Walk new hires through your storage setup as part of onboarding. Post a short reference guide near the storage area covering which containers to use, where each battery type belongs, and what to do with a battery that looks damaged. If employees can recognize a swollen lithium-ion battery and know to remove it from storage right away, they’re less likely to leave a damaged battery sitting with the rest of your stock.
Dispose of Dead Batteries Promptly
Dead batteries don’t belong in your storage area. Once a battery is drained and done, keeping it in the same space as your active stock creates clutter that leads to mix-ups. Certain battery types also continue to pose a leak or corrosion risk even after they’re fully discharged.
Most municipalities prohibit throwing lithium-ion and rechargeable batteries in standard trash. Set up a dedicated disposal bin separate from your storage area and designate a drop-off schedule with a local recycling facility or retailer that accepts used batteries. Keeping disposal and storage physically separate eliminates confusion and keeps your active inventory clean.

The right containers, the right temperature, a rotation schedule, and a team that knows the basics—that’s what keeps a small storage task from becoming an expensive or dangerous problem. Set the system up once, train the people who interact with it, and you’ll rarely have to think about it again.
